Little known ways to get more from your Google Mail address

Google actually gives you more than just "yourname@gmail.com" when you use their free email service.  Here's a couple ways you can modify your GMail address and still get your mail:

1 - Append a plus ("+") sign and any combination of words or numbers AFTER your email address.

For example, if your gmail address is johndoe@gmail.com, you could send mail to johndoe+bank@gmail.com or johndoe+wcbm@gmail.com and you would receive the mail as normal.

2 - Insert one or several dots (".") anywhere in your email address. Gmail doesn't recognize periods as characters in addresses -- they just ignore them.

For example, you could tell people your address was john.doe@gmail.com or john......doe@gmail.com and you would still receive your mail.

Why would you want to do this?

To automatically sort your mail.  For example - You could setup a rule or 'filter' in GMail to automatically put all mail sent to johndoe+bank@gmail.com into a folder or 'label' called 'Bank'.  It could automatically have mail addressed to johndoe+janedoe@gmail.com to forward a copy to janedoe@gmail.com.
(Google help page on using filters here)

You could add a certain number of dots (john........doe@gmail.com) in your gmail address when you register on a website.  Then if you get spam addressed to you with eight dots in it, you know which website gave out your email address without your permission.  If you have your email address posted on any websites, you can know where the person got your email address from by the # of dots (and have GMail sort the mail into the appropriate folder).
